Politeness Counts
While it doesn’t immediately sound like something that a lot of people first investigating the digital world of online dating and such should think about, being polite and conscientious is one of the best, if not most important, traits that anyone can develop – can be a real help in having a good and best of all productive time online.
It’s understandable that a lot of people, however, feel a certain kind of power at being anonymous online: they feel that since what they are writing cannot immediately be traced back to them they can say whatever they want without repercussions. But what these people totally forget about is that no one really is anonymous online: yes, the identities we create to do online dating and interacting may not immediately be traced back to who we are in the real world but that doesn’t mean that someone’s online reputation isn’t important.
Think of it this way: you go online to have a good time chatting with people and even, possibly, leading to some real-world sexual contacts. While the persona you develop online is not immediately who you are in the real world what good it is to have a bad reputation? In other words, if you have a bad rep online then how is that going to lead to have a good time either their or in the real world? By being polite and, to put it simply, nice online you can make a lot of friends that can open a lot of doors in many, many ways – including possibly leading to real-world sexual encounters.
So why it appear that you can say anything online keep in mind that being a jerk in the digital world is just as foolish as it is to be one in the real world. And if you become one you will find just as many doors closed for you in the digital world just as you may find them closed in the world of flesh and blood.
